What is the Impact of the Cybersecurity Skills Shortage?

Written by | Oct 29, 2020

As anyone working in the field of cybersecurity knows, the skills gap is a very real—and very pressing—problem for organizations across the world. Beyond the time, expense and effort of recruiting, the gaps in filling positions result in additional pressure on existing security staff, who are typically working in teams of between 6 to 15 staff members – a relatively small number given the huge responsibilities they are tasked with.

In this new white paper, How To Minimize the Impact of the Cybersecurity Skills Shortage, the skills gap is examined along with solutions that can help maximize the impact that existing cybersecurity teams make, including advanced technologies like managed threat detection and response (MTDR).

The paper was based on a survey of 130 cybersecurity professionals in mid-sized and large organizations. Some of its key findings include:

  • The supply of cybersecurity professionals is far less than the demand – and the role itself is difficult, complex and frequently overwhelming.

  • The rising volume and variety of cyber threats, plus the global supply shortage, means a different hiring strategy is needed.

  • Advanced security services and technology providers offer high potential for addressing the skills shortage.

How To Minimize the Impact of the Cybersecurity Skills Shortage

Organizations across the world have unfilled cybersecurity vacancies, and the cybersecurity professionals already on staff are pushed to their limits. Something must change to address the staff shortages that are limiting organizations’ ability to erect and maintain strong defenses. This paper examines the cybersecurity skills shortage and advocates for the use of advanced security services and technologies that more effectively leverage the time of current professionals.
