As 2024 has wrapped up, we went around the room and asked some of Trustwave’s top executives what cybersecurity issues and technology they saw playing a prominent role in 2025.
I'm willing to go on a limb this year and say there is an excellent chance we will see the first fully autonomous and end-to-end malware, ransomware, or other cyberattack campaigns take place.
These attacks will operate more or less without human intervention, leveraging AI systems to execute every phase, from creating malicious code to managing the infrastructure and handling victim communications. Cybercriminals could "push a button" and let AI systems handle tasks traditionally requiring human expertise, such as generating malware, running command-and-control (C2) servers, and even crafting social engineering tactics. This leap in automation will elevate the scale and efficiency of attacks, taking cybercrime-as-a-service to unprecedented levels.
What I think will set this next generation of AI-powered cyberattacks apart is their seamless integration across the entire attack lifecycle. AI systems will not only generate the malware, but also manage post-infection operations, like interacting with victims through adaptive ransomware payment portals or automatically exploiting secondary targets.
This full autonomy eliminates the need for "humans in the loop," allowing attacks to run continuously, adapt in real-time, and evade detection with minimal oversight. As AI advances at an astonishing pace, this once-outlandish scenario now appears to be a logical evolution of today's capabilities, highlighting the urgency for advanced countermeasures in the cybersecurity landscape.
