CHICAGO (September 15, 2009) - A security expert from Trustwave, the leading provider of on-demand data security and payment card industry compliance management solutions to businesses and organizations throughout the world, will present at SOURCE Barcelona, September 21 through September 22. The presentation will be delivered by a member of SpiderLabs, the advanced security team at Trustwave responsible for incident response and forensics, ethical hacking and application security.

Charles Henderson, practice manager for application security at Trustwave, will deliver The Future Application Security Landscape, on September 22, 2009, which will look at the future of application security and present ways to ensure all applications are secure from potential threats. This presentation will cover the security of web applications, client servers, stand-alone applications, back-end provisioning applications or any application based on programmer written code.

Henderson has spent the past few years looking at failures in application security that led to compromises. Using the information he learned from research and forensics investigations, Henderson will present a description of the application security landscape for the next five years.

The presentation will focus on authorization and logic flaws, as well as the use of targeted, controlled malware to subvert applications. Today, as businesses progress at securing their applications from SQL Injection and other canned programmatic threats, attackers are looking at new ways to harvest information. Targeted malware attacks are designed to specifically target one single application rather than a broad attack against larger networks. The malware can go undetected for months as attackers harvest data and only the attackers can control the malware.

Logic flaws are errors in the typical way in which an application should behave. These flaws often go unnoticed when applications are scanned with automated tools that cannot test logic flaws because they don't understand human logic. A manual test conducted by a security expert is able to pick off unique errors, logic flaws and authorization flaws that automated tools have a difficult time finding. Without actual human testing of an application, users are able to evade the system and access information meant only for network administrators. Today, businesses have exhausted automated tools, leaving business logic flaws unaccounted for resulting in an open door for attackers to compromise major applications.

"Enforcing application security is vital to a business because that is where critical data lies," says Robert J. McCullen, chairman and CEO of Trustwave. "Attackers are looking for the simplest, most cost-effective method to penetrate an application, which is why organizations need to shore up any holes in their application layer and develop applications more in line with security best practices."

"We understand the security landscape today and can use our experience to help businesses stay ahead of the threat curve," says Nicholas J. Percoco, senior vice president of SpiderLabs at Trustwave. "This presentation will help security developers ensure their applications are secure against the next big threat."
